Autumn Buds Scarf pattern by Liudmyla Hefny

Who this is for: Intermediate crocheters looking to refine their style and skill through short-row shaping and sophisticated slip-stitch textures.

Prerequisite Skills Necessary:

To get the most out of this class, students should already be comfortable with:

  • Holding yarn and hook with consistent tension

  • Working standard crochet stitches (ch, sc, dc)

  • Reading a written pattern with abbreviations

  • Starting with a foundation chain and identifying back bumps

  • Basic stitch anatomy and counting stitches across a row

  • Fastening off and weaving in ends

  • Switching yarn colors between rows

These foundational skills ensure that students can confidently focus on learning the structure and rhythm of the short-row slip-stitch pattern without struggling with basic crochet technique.

Skills Gained:

  • Understanding short-row shaping in crochet

  • Mastering yarn over slip stitch (yo-slst), half double crochet (hdc), and extended hdc (e-hdc)

  • Working a slip-stitch-based textured fabric

  • Creating a reversible stitch pattern with structural rhythm

  • Planning scarf length and optionally customizing width as you go

  • Weaving ends securely using a pointy needle

  • Blocking techniques to enhance texture and drape

  • Finishing panels cleanly for polished edges

Materials:

  • Worsted or Light Bulky Yarn:  Choose a yarn with approximately 150–250 meters per 100g. You’ll need 300–400g total, depending on your desired scarf length and width.

    • Suggested yarns: Malabrigo Worsted, Cascade 128 Superwash, Berroco Vintage, or similar smooth-textured yarns. Tip: Choose solid, tweed, or subtle hand-dyed yarns to highlight the textured stitch pattern. Avoid high-contrast variegated yarns, as they may obscure the design. Z-twist yarns may alter stitch appearance.

  • Main Hook: Size 5.0 mm to 6.5 mm, depending on your tension and yarn choice

  • Finishing Hook: One size 0.5 mm smaller for the final row (e.g., use a 5.0 mm hook if your main hook is 5.5 mm)

  • Tapestry needle (pointy tip) – ideal for securely weaving ends through textured stitches

  • Scissors

Class Description:

  • Control gauge for a clean, elegant drape

  • Customize panel width and length confidently

  • Finish and block their work professionally

Whether you're new to structured shaping or just looking for a textured pattern with visual impact, this class offers the tools, support, and joy to help you succeed.

Most students will leave with a strong start on their scarf and the confidence to finish at home. follow-up support is available via text or email (574)215-2421 or hermitagestudiofiberarts@gmail.com for anyone needing help to finish their project.
