A basic mitten and fingerless mitt is an integral part of all knitters’ repertoire.  This pattern is part of TinCanKnits' “The Simple Collection”.  This is the same collection as the Flax sweater, Barley Hat, and Oats Cowl in previous classes.  Multisided from Toddler to Large Adult with a mitten or mitt option.  1 yarn or stripe options are available.

Prerequisites:

§  Knit, Purl, and transition between the two stitches

§  Follow a pattern

§  If you have completed Intro to Knitting, you are ready for this class.

Skill Focus:

·         Knitting in the round

·         Following a pattern

·         Working on Double Point Needles

·         Picking up and Knitting

·         Increases and Decreases

·         Methods for working on a small Circumference on both:

o    Double point Needles

o   2 Circular needles

o   Colorway: Anything you want

o   Strong Contrast if doing design option C

Needles

·      2 US size 4-16” circulars (shorty tips if interchangeable)

·      2 US size 6-16” circulars (shorty tips if interchangeable)

·      1 Set US size 4 DPN*

·      1 Set US size 6 DPN *

Notions

·         Standard knitting notions

·         Removable locking stitch markers

·         Barber Cords

*Note on Needles:   For DPN – Double Point Needles.  Mittens/Mitts can typically be worked on 5” long DPN but you may like longer needle to feel more secure and that the stitches won’t fall off, while the shorter might fit nicer in your hands.  You may like to get one size in 1 length and another size in the other length.  As you grow as a knitter, you will use them for whatever length, and it won’t be a waste of a purchase.

The listed needles will allow you to work both mittens/mitts at the same time – 1 on the circulars and 1 on the double points for learning purposes.  If you think you will want to do both the same way, you may double the circulars or the double points, BUT you will need to have at least 1 set of each.

A Set:

·         Circular:  2 size 4 16” circulars & 2 size 6 16” circulars

·         DPN: 1 set of size 4 DPN and 1 set of size 6 DPN

Design Options:

Design Option A is one yarn. If you have not made a mitten/mitt before, it is recommended that you complete 1 pair in Design Option A prior to doing Option C.

Design Option C creates stripes, and the pattern will be modified.  When selecting yarn, you will want to make sure there is, a strong contrast.  When looking at the amount of yarn required, 60% of the required amount will be the Main Color and 40% will be the accent color.

Prep:

·        Gather all materials.  If they are new needles, remove them from the package at least 24 hours before class to allow them to relax and untangle.

·        Wind yarn.  I suggest splitting it into two cakes so you can do both mittens/mitts at 1 time.
